Here is a note from one of the 4 members of the "Summer Squad: "I am one of four members of Bowmanville Rotary's Summer Squad, a new, 8-week, summer student respite enthusiast program. For the past 7 weeks, we have worked as a team to create programs, run events, and volunteer with community-led organizations to bring positivity, and find ways to get the community together during these hard times. We have managed to organize and run many successful events this summer including the Drive-In Movie Event at Pingle's Farm on July 9th, a Pop-Up Concert for Retirement Homes on July 17th, and a Community Car Wash last Sunday, July 19th. We have also had a strong involvement with the Durham L.I.F.E. Organization, volunteering every Thursday in Memorial Park handing out clothing and organizing donations. Every Wednesday, two of our teammates have been visiting the homes of families who had been previously involved in the Rotary respite program, providing an alternative, physically-distanced visitation program with children. With each and every program we create or organization we volunteer with, the Summer Squad has aimed to provide public education, community involvement and community support, something that has become dire amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
