Each new Rotary year, every club in District 7070 is asked to contribute a minimum of $139 to support an HIV/AIDS-related project chosen by the members of RADAR – Rotary Action for the Development of AIDS Responses – our District 7070 AIDS committee.

Has your Club donated $139 or more, this Rotary year? Here's why, and here's how.........

To our Fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors and the District 7070 Rotary family,

The RADAR $139 initiative was created with the encouragement of Past District Governor Bill Patchett, who wanted every club in the District to have the opportunity “to get on the RADAR” and to help alleviate the massive suffering caused by HIV/AIDS.  In 2006, $139 represented the approximate cost to save the life of an HIV+ mother and her baby for one year. Each new Rotary year, every club in District 7070 is asked to contribute a minimum of $139 to support an HIV/AIDS-related project chosen by the members of RADAR – Rotary Action for the Development of AIDS Responses – our District 7070 AIDS committee.

Donations of $139 (and some clubs donate even more)  from your Rotary Club and all of the Rotary Clubs across the District bring hope, health and dignity to so many each year.

Since 2006, the RADAR$139 initiative has supported the work of organizations such as Dignitas International, Mother to Mothers, the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Kids for Cotlands (an orphanage in Capetown, South Africa), and to Morgan Weinberg's "LITTLE FOOTPRINTS...BIG STEPS orphanage in Haiti.

In 2018, RADAR selected Ontario Aboriginal HIV AIDS Strategy (OAHAS) to be the beneficiary of the RADAR$139 funding. Oahas mission is to provide culturally respectful and sensitive programs and strategies to respond to the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic among Aboriginal people in Ontario through promotion, prevention, long-term care, treatment and support initiatives consistent with harm reduction.

In 2019-20, we were honoured and excited to announce Latinos Positivos as the recipient of the 2019/2020 RADAR139 funds. The Rotary Action for the Development of AIDS Resources (RADAR) started the RADAR139 initiative as a way of generating funds and awareness for people with HIV/AIDS.

Over the last 15+ years, the RADAR139 initiative has raised thousands for local and international organizations working in the support of HIV/AIDS programs.  At the beginning of the Rotary year (July 1st) clubs were asked to donate to the RADAR139 fund in support of a charitable organization working specifically with the AIDS community.

In 2019-20, Rotary District 7070 raised $4,088 from 21 clubs. They are as follows:

  • RC of Belleville

  • RC of Agincourt

  • RC of Brighton

  • RC of Courtice

  • RC of Kleinburg, Nobleton, Schomberg

  • RC of Markham Sunrise

With the recent world events, there’s a pivotal opportunity before us. In the coming years we will need to continue our work to transform lives by developing and implementing models of care and sustainable solutions to global health challenges. We will dare to imagine a world where all people have access to quality health care. We thank you for your work in helping us achieving this vision.

Why Latinos Positivos?

For over a decade, Rotary District 7070 has organized a walkathon on the last Saturday of April to promote HIV/AIDS awareness across the globe. Due the vast geographical span of our district, Toronto has worked in tandem with Belleville to put on two walks so that all 54 clubs in our district have an opportunity to participate somewhere not too far from home. We encourage our entire district to participate through support and attendance.  Over the past half-decade, I have been lucky enough to chair the Toronto based Poker Walk which has led  me not only to promote and  raise money in support of people who are dealing with HIV/AIDS, but also to form lasting friendships within a community that, prior to the walk, I had no opportunity to engage with.

It has been a great personal pleasure to work with several beneficiaries over the past five years. However, with no group have I felt as close as I feel with Ower and Latinos Positivos. In Latinos Positivos I have found a small but mighty group of volunteers with irresistible charm. Their work in supporting the Latino-Canadian population with HIV/AIDS, sometimes across Canada and with very minimal staff, has been both tireless yet necessary. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Ower and the team. I look forward to continuing and building upon that relationship over the coming years. Working together, we look forward to a time when we will no longer see or must worry about the financial and social disparity currently faced by an immigrant in Canada with HIV/AIDS.

Donations of $139 or more from your Rotary Club and all of the Rotary Clubs across the District bring hope, health, and dignity to so many each year.

To donate to RADAR$139, Please make your cheque payable to:  Rotary District 7070 and MEMO it to RADAR139. Please mail to District Treasurer Larry Whatmore at 373 Rouge Hills Drive, Scarborough, ON M1C 2Z4

We thank you, in advance, for being supporters of RADAR 139 !!
