Horn of Africa and Yemen strengthen push to end polio

On the sidelines of last week’s World Health Assembly, countries from the Horn of Africa and Yemen reaffirmed their commitment to stopping variant poliovirus transmission through stronger cross-border coordination, surveillance and synchronized action. In one of the world’s most interconnected epidemiological settings, regional collaboration remains essential to reaching every child and stopping transmission for good. More.

  • Afghanistan:  one WPV1 case of a child striken with polio and eleven WPV1-positive environmental samples
  • Madagascar:  one cVDPV1 case of a child striken with polio
  • Nigeria:  three cVDPV3 cases of children striken with polio
  • Somalia:  two cVDPV2 cases of children striken with polio and three cVDPV2 environmental samples
  • South Sudan:  one cVDPV1 case of a child striken with polio
There were 52 wild polio virus type 1 cases of children stricken with polio in the 2025 Calendar Year  . From Jan 1 to May 26, there were 14 cases of children stricken with polio in 2025 vs 7 cases of children stricken with polio in the 2026 Calendar Year as of May  26, 2026 (3 in Pakistan and 4 in Afghanistan) : https://polioeradication.org/wild-poliovirus-count/
