THOUSANDS IN DANGER: Rohingya Crisis:  Since August, religious conflict and increased violence have forced thousands of Rohingyas to flee Myanmar. To date, over 500,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh. But after the worst flooding seen in decades in Bangladesh, these families are being forced to set up makeshift camps in a sea of mud.....

The International Organization for Migration and the government of Bangladesh are working together to set up a 2,000 Acre site to shelter families. ShelterBox aims to identify shelter gaps, assess needs and provide the most appropriate response. We currently have a team in the Cox’s Bazar area working closely with Rotarians from District 3282.

Response Team Volunteer and Rotarian Liz Odell (Past President Nailsworth Rotary Club) is meeting with families in Cox Bazar and has this to say about the current situation:

This camp contains about 50,000 people. They are crammed together in really small, flimsy shelters built of very thin black plastic. Most of them fled just carrying what they could, they had a three or four hour journey across the river just coming in the clothes they stood up in. They are in desperate need of better shelter. They need cooking pots, they need water carriers, they need blankets and above all they need a bit more space and more shelter.”

With more Rohingya families fleeing for their lives, we’re impatient to send aid, but we need your help.

SHINE FOR SHELTERBOX: Make a difference this winter
Around 85 million people around the world have been made homeless by natural disaster and conflict.  That's millions of families with no roof over their heads, no warmth, no comfort, and no light when the sun goes down. The last few months have seen devastating disasters around the world. With Hurricane Irma and Maria leaving entire islands uninhabitable and thousands of families fleeing from violence in Myanmar, Syria and Iraq, the need has never been greater.  You can help us bring a little light to those in need. By hosting a candlelit fundraising feast and bringing together your family and friends, you can raise money to help others. Watch the video to find out how you can get involved.

ShelterBox is currently assisting families in Niger, Cameroon and Chad due to the Lake Chad Basin crisis, Iraq and the Syrian Region due to ongoing conflict, Somaliland as a result of the ongoing drought and famine, the Caribbean after Hurricane Irma, Nepal and Bangladesh due to flash flooding and Cameroon due to flooding. ShelterBox is also monitoring Hurricane Talim, Mexico, Hurricane Katia, Venezuela, Sudan and Nigeria.

Bangladesh
ShelterBox currently has a team working closely with the Rotary Club of Dhaka Kawran Bazar and other clubs in District 3281 and Bangladesh Red Cross to develop plans for distribution to support some of the families who have been affected by monsoon rains and widespread flooding. ShelterKits, luminAID solar lights, tarpaulins and mosquito nets have started arriving in country to help families in need.

ShelterBox is also working in South Eastern Bangladesh to identify shelter gaps and assess the needs after an estimated 508,000 Rohingya refugees have crossed into Bangladesh since August 25th.

The Caribbean
ShelterBox has been working in the Caribbean after Hurricane Irma and Maria swept through the area, causing widespread damage. Based on assessments and capacity, ShelterBox Response Teams in the Caribbean are currently concentrating their efforts on Dominica, Barbuda, Antigua, British Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic.

ShelterBox will be the main provider of emergency shelter solutions on Barbuda, where we will provide ShelterKits to families with partially destroyed homes to support the recovery efforts. Families whose homes were completely destroyed will receive a tent and a ShelterKit, this will allow them to stay on their home site while they rebuild. Our teams are also working with Rotarians in District 4060 and Habitat for Humanity to support families and communities in the Dominican Republic. On the other islands affected we are working to provide ShelterKits and other essential aid items to support recovery.

ShelterBox is also operating in Somaliland, the Syrian Region, Iraq, Niger,  Chad and Cameroon. Read more about our current operations here.
