CYCLONE IDAI UPDATE: Flooding in Malawi

Cyclone Idai tore through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe in early March, destroying homes and livelihoods. According to the UN, this devastating cyclone may be the worst ever disaster to hit the southern hemisphere. Thanks to the support of Rotary Clubs in Canada and around the world, aid has arrived in country and is being hand-delivered to families. ShelterKits, mosquito nets, water filters, and blankets are making their way to families who need it most. ShelterKits will help families rebuild their homes or create shelter, mosquito nets will protect from insect-borne disease, and water filters will keep families safe from water-borne disease and help prevent the spread of cholera.

Rotary District 9210 is the most affected, covering Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. District Governor Hutchson Mthinda is in close contact with ShelterBox and helped provide local updates from the earliest stages of the disaster. The team has been in direct contact with the Rotary Club of Limbe and have explored options for closer engagement during distributions. The club’s focus is now on distributing emergency food so the ShelterBox team have introduced them to contacts within the Malawi Red Cross, who are coordinating food distributions in the region.

2,000 families across Chikwawa and Mulanje regions need support the most and will be receiving aid and training as soon as possible. Your continued support will ensure that ShelterBox can continue to support families who need it most in Malawi and around the world. You can find the latest updates at www.shelterboxcanada.org/operations-update

ShelterBox and Rotary are official project partners in international disaster relief. ShelterBox is a registered charity independent of Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation.  Since  2012, we have been neighbours, friends and community leaders. Their aim is to create positive, lasting change in communities at home and all over the world.project partners with Rotary International, a global community of 1.2 million. Rotary has supported ShelterBox from the start when a local club championed the simple idea to package up essential shelter items in our now-iconic ShelterBoxes. As ShelterBox grew, so did Rotary support, and we are now international project partners in disaster relief. This partnership has helped us to become who we are today. Our global network of ShelterBox affiliates, which provides all-round assistance, evolved from Rotary relationships.
