In her April 2023 Newsletter, Meg Schmeider, Community Program Coordinator at ShelterBox Canada, provides an update on how Rotararact and Shelterbox are working in Turkiye. Here's more of her newsletter.....
ShelterBox Update APRIL 2023:
TURKIYE RESPONSE UPDATE
Powerful earthquakes have ravaged southern Türkiye (formerly Turkey) and northern Syria, killing more than 40,000 people and flattening 20,000 buildings.
ShelterBox aid has arrived in Türkiye. We have a team on the ground in Gaziantep and are committed to responding, focusing on the areas where the needed is greatest. For the latest updates, please visit our response page online.
ShelterBox and Rotary have been working hand in hand together to support people affected by the earthquakes in Türkiye; including Rotaractors Bugra and Sara. In addition to our first stocks of tents imported into Türkiye soon after the earthquake, more tents and other essential items like blankets, mattresses, stoves, and lighting are almost ready. We’re preparing for distributions of these items to communities in Hatay.
Bugra and Sara are helping manage resources to get aid to those who need it. "In this kind of a disaster, the immediate response is very important and as we see right now, we are not ready for this kind of a big disaster. So, I hope in the future with ShelterBox and ShelterBox packages, we can be ready" reflected Bugra.
This is partnership in ACTION. We're grateful for the support of Rotarians here in Canada and those in the ground, like Sara and Bugra.
