IS TGHIS YOUR FAVOURITE ROTARY MOMENT ?

"MY FAVOURITE MOMENT"

A favourite Rotary Moment from Past District Governor Brian Thompson, Rotary Club of Whitby-Sunrise.

ROTARIAN SINCE: 1980

A FAVOURITE ROTARY MOMENT: A few years ago, my wife, Karen, and I travelled to India with other Rotarians, to participate in a National Immunization Day against polio. An NID in India takes place over the whole country over a five-day period.

All it takes is two small drops of an oral vaccine for a single dose for a child, but the logistics of getting it to where it’s needed without spoilage, of keeping track of all the children who need it, of who got immunized on Day One and who got missed that we could immunize on Day Two, not to mention fundraising, organization, etc. is a huge job.

So we were part of something much, much bigger than we were. We immunized dozens of children between the two of us, and I’m confident those children will never get polio … it’s a good feeling. But it was a well-orchestrated international team effort that provided the opportunity and resulted in 110 million children being immunized across the country. One hundred and ten million! And they were doing that twice a year!

PERSONAL OUTCOME: After supporting polio eradication for over 30 years remotely from Canada, both in donations and in advocacy, it was great to finally be on the front line, doing some hands-on work, immunizing children. Seeing the gratitude in mothers’ eyes was unforgettable, and frankly, having seen the challenges of poverty in a country of open defecation first-hand, I am amazed at the people of India, who did the “impossible” in becoming polio-free.
