Be Reading (Free Reading) in Ukraine

Be Reading has been afforded the opportunity to provide English literacy curriculum to orphans in the Ukraine.

We need your help! We need new or used small devices such as i-pads, notebooks, chrome books or light laptop with and power cord.

We can pick up the devices (see their contacts below). Our goal is 20 to 30 new or used devices which will be personally carried over to Ukraine  in the next few weeks.

Background

Violetta Pioro, a Durham resident and operations director for Global Guardian, a newly launched grassroots charity, and her partner Matthew Binkley, speakers at our May 2022 Rotary District 7070 Conference in Oshawa (employed by Durham College), who have just returned from the Ukraine, have been in contact with Joan Barrett. They are going to take as many computers as we can provide, to this orphanage in early September. Violetta is going back in early September!  and her sister is going over in late September. Be Reading will then be accessible to these children.

They have Wi-Fi and we can send the curriculum to them as soon as I receive a text that all is ready to go. The orphanage currently has 93 children ranging in age from 4 – 18 years. They have had to relocate numerous times and right now are at a location in Poland. It has also been deemed that the second language taught in the Ukraine will be English. These children currently receive no formal instruction.

A few months ago, the instructions on how to log your child into Be Reading, were translated into Ukrainian with the help of a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Etobicoke and his mother. This customized Ukrainian campus, for an unlimited number of students in need, is ready to use!

Where We Are Now

The Rotary Club of Scarborough has recently donated funds to begin the buying of tablets, as we continue to support Be Reading and the Ukraine.

To sustain and support the use of tablets for the children of Ukraine, please consider donating to Be Reading.

Be Reading provides a comprehensive, safe, and engaging tool for these students and ensures they have the tools they need to learn English online. This program assists any volunteers and tutors in providing English literacy lessons as well. By supporting this program, you are not just giving a tablet, you are giving a child the opportunity for lifelong, sustainable learning.

Your donation will support the buying of more tablets (goal 20 – 30) and help support the Ukrainian campus technology.
