Over the past year, COVID-19 has had profound and far-reaching impacts on many aspects of our lives. To explore the impacts of the global pandemic and the public health response, and to understand where we stand today in Ontario, the Rotary Club of Toronto Bay-Bloor is hosting a virtual presentation via Zoom, with Q & A, with Dr. David L. Mowat, former Chief Medical Officer of Health, Ontario and Former Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health, Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

Speaker bio:

Dr. David L. Mowat has served as a public health physician at local, provincial, and national levels over nearly forty years. He has been Medical Officer of Health in Kingston and in Peel, served twice as Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, and was Deputy Chief Public Health Officer at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). At Health Canada he directed the Pan-Canadian Network for Health Surveillance and worked on web-based surveillance systems. He has worked on the emergencies of SARS, H1N1 influenza and Ebola. He also recently worked with the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. He now works as a consultant in Public Health. During the COVID-19 Pandemic he served as the Public Health Consultant for the Office of Recovery and Rebuilding at the City of Toronto.

He has been recognized by the Canadian Public Health Association with their highest award, the DeFries Award. He has published and spoken frequently on public health issues, including health surveillance, the built environment, evidence-informed practice and workforce development. Dr. Mowat graduated in medicine from the University of Edinburgh, has a Masters of Public Health degree from The University of California at Berkeley, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
