Hello District 7070 Rotarians and the whole Rotary family:

April is Maternal and Child Health month in Rotary. In many Districts surrounding the Great Lakes, including District 7070, April is also a kickoff to ‘Supporting the Environment’ as the newest Area of Focus.

Maternal and Child Health

According to Rotary, an estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation.  To help mitigate these preventable causes of death, Rotary provides education, immunizations, birth kits, and mobile health clinics. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.     Please Read more  .............

Currently, District 7070 is participating in a Global Grant application for Maternal Health Care in Rural Tanzania.  This initiative will help reduce the risks to mothers associated with childbirth and to decrease infant mortality through the transfer of midwifery skills, enhanced knowledge of sanitation as a method of disease prevention and improved knowledge of healthy living practices.

For more information on the work District 7070 does related to Maternal and Child Health, please contact District Action Committee Chair, Richard Mewhinney (rmewhinney@rogers.com).

Supporting the Environment – the Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup, April 24

District 7070 will join 15 other Districts in 8 States and 2 Provinces surrounding the Great Lakes to clean the shores of our precious resource on April 24.  Our District Environmental Action Committee (contact nilam.bedi@gmail.com) is helping to prepare clubs for this event.  Join the Facebook Group, "Rotary Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup" where hundreds of people are now discussing and sharing pictures of their cleanup locations!!

Leading up to Earth Day and the Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup, District 7070 will be holding a virtual “Earth Day 2021 Virtual Celebration!” on Wednesday April 21, 7pm.   Register here.  This is open to all Rotarians and guests everywhere to hear:

  • The importance of the Great Lakes – Mark Fisher, CEO, Council of the Great Lakes – the health and vitality of the Great Lakes and multi-jurisdictional cooperation in managing this shared resource.

  • Sam Demma, PickWaste.  An entrepreneur and youth coach, Sam has a compelling and inspirational story delivered at several TED Talks.  Sam started PickWaste (in Durham Region), a community cleanup initiative that has caught widespread attention.

It is an exciting time in District 7070!

Yours In Rotary,
