June is Rotary Fellowships Month
Dear fellow Rotarians,
.Fellowship is Rotary International’s focus for the month of June. Many of us joined Rotary for community service, but our involvement in club social activities is one of the reasons we stay.
Many clubs have a yearly rhythm of social activities. These may include a late summer corn roast, holiday season wine and cheese party, Family Day Hike, Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day events, and spring social dinners hosted by Rotarians in their homes for Rotarians........
Our Action & Partnership Areas of Focus Coordinators have been busy since mid-March to assist and network with many of our District 7070 Rotary and Rotaract Clubs in getting the funds, help, and other resources to our local communities to combat the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. I thank them for their time and efforts in our project promotion and coordination, and in many cases being on the front line. A list of the Area of Focus Coordinators and their contact numbers are included in the attached communication.
A short time ago we passed along a short communication with 5 project ideas for your club to take advantage of the special one time 1:1 District Matching Grant for COVID-19 response projects. To date, over 22 of our Rotary and Rotaract Clubs have submitted a grant request. If you have not already, please do so now as May 31st, 2020 the is deadline for District Grant applications for the 2020-2021 Rotary year!
Many of our Senior Rotarians and others with health challenges must remain safely in their homes, but still want to contribute to efforts to battle COVID-19. Attached are some suggestions for 'stay safe at home' volunteer activities for Rotarians and Rotary/Rotaract Clubs that will really make a difference.
I thank you for all the work and volunteerism you have already undertaken to date! Keep up the fight and we will see better days!
Dear District Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, and Friends of Rotary,
The COVID-19 situation in Canada is evolving on a daily basis and even changing by the hour. The Federal and Provincial Governments, and medical advisors are asking all Canadians to take stronger measures to contain the spread of the virus. At this critical time, we need to practice the necessary hand hygiene practises, social distancing, and self-isolation if you have returned from travelling outside Canada.
By now you have read RI President Mark Maloney and RI President-elect Holger Knaack's email regarding Rotary's Role in Battling Coronavirus, and RI President Mark Maloney's email cancelling the 2020 Convention in Honolulu and re-inveting a Virtual convention for June 20-26. Here is further communication from RID Jeffry Cadorette and RIDE Valarie Wafer.
I encourage you to call your Rotary colleagues who are ill, house-bound for a number of reasons, or Rotarians that you have not seen in a while. Reach out to your neighbours for the same reasons. Does someone need groceries, their medication picked up, their dog walked, or to listen to their concerns?
Thank you for keeping me apprised of your Clubs’ response to COVID-19 with respect to meetings and events. Many Rotary and Rotaract Clubs have cancelled their regular meetings and events for the foreseeable future. We strongly encourage clubs to suspend all in-person meetings and events until further notice.
It is time to adopt an alternate meeting option that will allow everyone to stay connected until this COVID-19 situation subsides. There is a 20% discount offered for Zoom through Rotary Global Rewards to have online meetings up to 100 participants with unlimited minutes. Just use the discount code of "ZOOMROTARY" when purchasing; use this link https://rotary.perkhub.com/offers/9832-zoom-video-conferencing/click.
Clubs can also sign up for a free Zoom account at https://zoom.us/. The free service allows groups of up to 100 people to connect for up 40 minutes.
Here are the set-up instructions for a free account - -Go to zoom.us -In the top right corner, click "sign up, it's free" -Choose to connect to your Gmail or Facebook account, or provide info for a new account -You will be asked to confirm your account via the email/account you provided -The first time you join a meeting, you will be asked to allow the zoom application to download to your computer

In his June 2020 message to Rotarians, Gary Huang, Chair of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation, (and also Past President of Rotary International), tells us about what Rotarians worldwide are doing to fight the COVID-19 in their communities. He reminds us that we can use district grant funds to support local activities, such as purchasing protective medical gear for health workers and helping with the local food banks. He notes that the Trustees of the Rotary Fundation were able to quickly approve millions of dollars for the Disaster Response Fund to make a multitude of disaster relief grants immediately available for club and district projects related to COVID-19 relief efforts. Gary adds that our fight for the cause of public health is at a critical point. We must overcome COVID-19 and continue to build on the many decades of programs and projects of our Foundation.......

The end of the Rotary year is fast approaching. And with that, clubs are beginning to think about their traditional changeover ceremonies. Like many things in the world after the COVID-19 pandemic, having these in person isn’t an option. Clubs are asking, should we postpone or cancel? I want to pose another question, why not adapt and hold one virtually?....
Over the last ten or so years, many District 7070 Clubs have used Club Visioning to review their operations and future plans. Some Clubs have held Club Visioning sessions on a regular basis. We are using a format that we share with more than 100 districts around the world. However, for the last few years the activity has dropped, both in D7070 and other districts.
A couple of months ago, this downward trend resulted in Past District Governor Steve Wilcox, who once designed the program, to ask a few facilitators to be part of a committee reviewing and up-dating the program. As I assisted him to introduce Club Visioning in Sweden and Scandinavia, he invited me to be part of the committee....
Here is a nice note from District 7070's very own Past Rotary International President Wilf Wilkinson, thanking everyone for all of the 90th birthday wishes that Wilf received last week from all over the Rotary world. We know that some of the 2019-20 Rotary Citation goals may be difficult for clubs to achieve during this pandemic, so we’ve revised the requirements. Instead of achieving five of the nine goals in the Unite People and Take Action categories, clubs now need to achieve at least three goals in each of these categories. The Presidential Distinction requirements remain the same, and clubs still need to be in good standing to be eligible.
We appreciate the work you continue to do during this time and are looking forward to seeing the creative ways in which clubs achieve their goals. Clubs can still report their achievements as described in the Achievement Guide and use the Rotary Citation Recipients report on My Rotary to check their progress. As People of Action, we share a strong sense of purpose.
More than a century ago, we pioneered a new model of service leadership grounded in person-to-person connections. Today, those connections are a network that spans the globe—bridging cultural, linguistic, generational, and geographic barriers—and shares the vision of a better world. As People of Action, we understand that fulfilling that vision requires a plan. This is Rotary’s plan for the next five years: to increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement, and increase our ability to adapt........

Rotarians all over the world are applying for Global Grants in a way not anticipated by the Rotary Foundation. One reason is the COVID 19 crisis. Rotary Clubs have acted very swiftly, including identifying opportunities with the Global Grant program.
Overall, this is very positive. However, it has also brought some urgent problems. The World Fund of the Rotary Foundation is running out of money. As everyone who has completed the Foundation Qualification modules knows, the World Fund is the fund that handles the matching of Club cash and District Designated Funds (DDF) by the Foundation on Global Grant projects.....

The Rotary Foundation requires Clubs, that want to apply for District or Global Grants to projects, must be qualified. A Rotary Club is qualified once it has done the following
- have at least two of its members successfully complete the training provided by the District, and
- have its President and President Elect submit to the District a signed copy of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
The qualification is valid for one year. It makes the whole Club qualified and responsible, not just the two members that complete the qualification process. Once again, District 7070 is using on-line training for the qualification process. Three modules (The Rotary Foundation, Global Grants and District Grants) can be found under the Rotary Foundation tab on the District's website, http://www.rotary7070.org. Quizzes, each consisting of nine questions, are connected with the modules. Seven of the nine questions must be correctly answered to pass each quiz. Once a Rotarian has successfully completed all three Quizzes, s/he is qualified and will count towards the Club's Qualification.....
In 2013, Rotary set out on its new grant model under the Future Vision Plan, in the hopes that the approach would enhance the scope, impact, and sustainability of humanitarian projects. Past President Wilf noted, “I think the radio interview and the Public Service Announcement on radio station 95.5 Hits FM helped. The best part is that these parents downloaded a set of 5-10 lessons at first, then a few days later they return and download a lot more.”

In October 2019, the Board of Directors of Rotary International made several changes to the policies related to Rotaract, which were recommended by the Elevate Rotaract Task Force. The 2019 Council on Legislation amended the constitutional documents of Rotary International to include Rotaract clubs as a membership type. After this landmark decision in April, RI President Mark Maloney appointed the Elevate Rotaract Task Force, composed of Rotaractors and Rotarians, to recommend updates to policies to better reflect Rotaract’s newly elevated status. At every stage of the Task Force’s discussions, the critical goals were to learn what Rotaractors want from their membership and to give them every opportunity to shape these important policy decisions through surveys and focus groups.
