DESCRIPTION:Nilam Bedi\, Chair\, and all of the members of the District 707
0 Areas of Focus Environment Committee invite YOU to hear our keynote spea
ker\,  Dr. Mathis Wackernagel\, Founder and President\, Global Footprint
Network. Dr. Wackernagel is an internationally recognized authority on de
veloping metrics for ecological sustaianbility who published extensively a
nd won numerous award for his work.  Title:   Supporting the Environme
nt: Are we committed to our own success? The Topic of his Talk: The futu
re has never been more predictable than today. We know that people will w
ant to eat\, sleep\, be safely sheltered\, and move around.. They will als
o live in a world with more extreme weather and climate change\, as well a
s fewer ecological resources. We already have a massive overshoot of our
demands upon the planet relative to what it can sustain. Dialling back thi
s overshoot\, even if we do it ultra-fast\, will not be a quick-fix for th
e extreme weather and fewer ecological resources. What we also know for s
ure: humanity will get out of overshoot one way or another - the choice is
merely whether it will be by design or through disaster. Therefore\, comm
unities\, corporations or countries that do not prepare for this predicta
ble future will be at a large disadvantage. What are we waiting for? What
are our options?   Be sure to register to hear Dr. Wackernagel explore t
hese questions and learn how Rotarians can get involved in tackling the th
 reats to our planet.
